DMG Mori Control Generation

Spindle Service on Siemens 840D (DMG Mori)

Siemens 840D is where DMG Mori spindle parameters live for the majority of the lineup. Spindle drive tuning, encoder configuration, and machine-data parameters are managed at the 840D layer; CELOS handles the operator workflow on top. Before any spindle work we capture the parameter set via the Siemens-standard backup path. Original 840D (non-solutionline) is at late-life status for control hardware; solutionline is fully current.

Machines this control shipped on

840D ships on most of the DMG Mori lineup — NLX/ALX, CTX/CLX, NTX, NHX/NH, NVX/NV/NVD, CMX, DMP/Milltap, SPRINT/MULTISPRINT, and the DMC variants.

Common failures and fixes

  • Spindle parameters lost when memory battery dies on a powered-down 840D PCU.
  • Spindle drive amplifier faults on older builds — original 840D drives heading toward late-life.
  • MMC failures on original 840D affecting spindle programming and diagnostic visibility.
  • Encoder feedback issues at the 840D layer that can present as spindle problems.

Parts availability

Siemens 840D spindle drives are well supported through Siemens and authorized service partners on solutionline. Original 840D (non-sl) drives are heading toward aftermarket and remanufactured-only over the next several years.

Battery, memory, and parameter recovery

Spindle parameter backup on 840D is documented Siemens procedure — back up via the operator panel before any battery or board work. Spindle-specific parameters (drive tuning, encoder offsets, preload settings) go into the standard backup set.
